The K-Beauty Glass Skin Routine — Step by Step (2026 Guide)

“Glass skin” — the K-beauty obsession that refuses to fade. Translucent, dewy, almost luminescent skin you can practically see through. Born from Seoul beauty editors in the late 2010s, the look went global on TikTok in 2024, and by 2026 it’s the default goal of K-beauty routines worldwide.
The myth: glass skin needs filters or genetics. The reality: it’s overwhelmingly about layering hydration correctly and protecting the barrier. The 10-step routine isn’t a marketing gimmick — it’s a clinical layering logic that drives water deep into the skin and then locks it there.
This guide walks you through every step, why each one matters, and which products our team rotates through. Every product is stocked at COLORCITY — click any name to shop it directly.
The Principle: Layering Like a Cake
Think of skin as a sponge cake. You want each layer to soak up water before adding the next. Watery products go first (toners, essences). Heavier products go last (creams, sunscreen). Skip a step, and the next layer has nothing to hold onto.
Most K-beauty editors do 8–10 steps morning and night. You don’t have to. The starter routine at the bottom of this guide uses just 5 products and gets you 80% of the way there.
Step 1 — Oil Cleanser (PM only)
The first cleanse, before water. Oil dissolves oil — meaning it lifts sunscreen, makeup, and the day’s sebum off your skin in a way water-based cleansers can’t. Skip this and double-cleansing isn’t double-cleansing — it’s just a longer first cleanse.
Use roughly a 20-cent coin’s worth on dry skin. Massage for 60 seconds, then emulsify with a splash of water before rinsing. Glass skin starts here: a clean, undamaged barrier.

Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil 200ml
Anua's cult Heartleaf cleansing oil — calming + makeup-melting in one pump.

Banila Co Zero clean it original cleansing balm 50ml
The original K-beauty cleansing balm. Solid texture, melts to oil, rinses clean.
Step 2 — Water-Based Cleanser
The second cleanse. A gel or foam that removes any oil residue, sweat, and water-soluble impurities the oil cleanser missed. Choose low pH (5.0–5.5) to respect your skin’s acid mantle — the foundation of barrier health.

Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser 150ml
Pioneered the low-pH category in K-beauty. Gentle enough for daily AM use.

Beplain Mung Bean Ph-balanced Cleansing Foam 80ml
Mung bean foam — budget-friendly with luxurious texture and zero stripping.
Step 3 — Exfoliator (1–3x per week)
Skip this step daily. Glass skin needs controlled exfoliation — over-exfoliation creates the inflamed, sensitised skin that’s the opposite of glass. Once weekly for sensitive skin, two or three times for normal/oily.
Chemical exfoliators (AHA, BHA, PHA) work better than physical scrubs for glass skin because they leave the surface smooth, not micro-torn.

Some By Mi AHA, BHA, PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner 150ml - 150ml
The legendary Korean acid toner combining AHA, BHA and PHA in one barrier-safe formula.
Step 4 — Toner / Hydrating Mist
The first watery layer. K-beauty toners are NOT the alcohol-based astringents Western brands trained us on — they’re hydrating preps that load the skin with water and active ingredients before the next steps.
Pat (don’t wipe) onto damp skin for maximum absorption. For glass skin specifically, look for ingredients like centella, heartleaf, panthenol, and birch sap — not just alcohol-free, but actively hydrating.

Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner 250ml
77% Heartleaf extract — the TikTok-famous calming toner. Reduces redness over time.

Round Lab Birch Juice Ampoule 50ml
Round Lab's signature birch juice base. Hydrating, lightweight, layer-friendly.
Step 5 — Essence / First Treatment
K-beauty’s most uniquely Asian step. Essences are watery treatments with a high concentration of actives — somewhere between toner and serum. They’re the “glass-skin glow boosters” that make the routine work.
Snail mucin essences in particular are the cornerstone — the hyaluronic acid + glycoproteins in snail filtrate visibly plumps skin within minutes.

Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence 100ml
The cult COSRX 96% snail mucin essence. Most-recommended essence in K-beauty for glow.

Skin1004 madagascar centella ampoule 100ml
Single-ingredient Madagascar Centella ampoule. Brilliant for calming and post-acne recovery.
Step 6 — Serum / Ampoule
The actives layer — where you target specific concerns. Brightening (niacinamide, vitamin C, glutathione), anti-ageing (retinal, peptides), or barrier (panthenol, centella).
For glass skin, niacinamide is the universal pick — it regulates oil, evens tone, and strengthens the barrier without irritation. Layer 2–3 drops, pat in, wait 30 seconds.

Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum 30ml
Beauty of Joseon's brightening serum — rice + niacinamide for that signature K-beauty glow.

Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Dark Spot Correcting Serum 30ml
Niacinamide 10% + tranexamic acid 4% — the strongest brightening combo in K-beauty.
Step 7 — Sheet Mask (1–3x per week)
The 15-minute hydration boost. Sheet masks force essence to stay in contact with skin so it can’t evaporate — which is exactly what glass skin needs.
Skip this step daily (you don’t need it). Use it Sunday night, before a big day, after a long flight, or whenever your skin needs an SOS.

Mary & May Cica Houttuynia Tea Tree Calming Mask (30pcs)
Mary & May's 30-pack of cica + tea tree calming masks — daily-use sheet mask economics.

Mandom Barrier Repair Facial Mask Moist 5 pcs
Mandom's barrier-repair mask in Moist — J-beauty's answer to overnight hydration in 15 minutes.
Step 8 — Eye Cream
The eye area is the thinnest, most fragile skin on your face. It loses water fastest and shows fatigue first. Use a dedicated eye product (not your face cream — too heavy for the under-eye).
For glass skin, the eye area needs the same dewy luminosity as the cheekbones. Snail mucin, peptides, and gentle retinal all earn their place here.

Cosrx Advanced Snail Peptide Eye Cream 25ml
COSRX's snail mucin + peptide eye cream — plumps fine lines without weighing down.

K-secret SEOUL 1988 Eye Cream : Retinal Liposome 4% + Fermented Bean 30ml
K-secret's retinal liposome eye cream — gentler than face retinol, targeted for crow's feet.
Step 9 — Moisturiser
The seal. Moisturiser locks in everything you’ve layered above it. For glass skin specifically, you want a moisturiser that’s rich enough to seal hydration but light enough not to add weight — the cream version of dewy.
Three picks at three price points and textures:

TIRTIR Ceramic Cream Light 50ml 50ml
TIRTIR's lightweight ceramic cream — the new-school K-beauty moisturiser.

Anua Heartleaf 70% Intense Calming Cream 50ml
Anua's bestselling calming cream — heartleaf-rich, light, layers well over serums.

Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream 50g
BoJ's Dynasty Cream — the Hanbang-rooted moisturiser with ginseng + niacinamide.
Step 10 — Sunscreen (AM) / Sleeping Mask (PM)
The most important step. Without daily SPF, every other step is undone by Australian UV. For glass skin: look for chemical sunscreens with hyaluronic acid or panthenol — they hydrate while they protect.
At night, swap SPF for an optional sleeping mask — a final overnight layer that traps everything else.

Beauty of joseon Relief Sun 50ml
Beauty of Joseon's cult sunscreen — SPF 50+, water-light, the K-SPF for Aussie weather.

Skin1004 Madagascar centella Hyalu-cica water-fit sun serum 50ml
SKIN1004's centella + hyaluronic acid sunscreen serum — true serum-texture SPF.

Glass Skin in 5 Products — The Minimum Viable Routine
If 10 steps feels overwhelming, this is the minimum that actually delivers glass-skin results. Five products, ten minutes, every day.
- Low-pH gel cleanser — COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser
- Hydrating toner — Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner
- Plumping essence — COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
- Light moisturiser — TIRTIR Ceramic Cream Light
- Sunscreen — Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun
Add a PM oil cleanser when you can, and a serum (niacinamide for brightening, snail peptide for plumping) once your routine is locked in.
Common Mistakes That Prevent Glass Skin
- Over-exfoliating. More than 3x weekly will give you red, sensitised, dehydrated skin — the opposite of glass.
- Skipping SPF on cloudy days. UV penetrates clouds. Australian UV is brutal — daily SPF is the difference between glowing and weathered.
- Layering too fast. Each layer needs ~30 seconds to absorb. Rushing causes pilling and reduces absorption.
- Using cold water. Lukewarm only. Cold water doesn’t close pores; it just tightens skin uncomfortably.
- Switching products too often. Skin needs 4–8 weeks to show real change. Give a routine time before adjusting.
The Bottom Line
Glass skin is a routine outcome, not a product outcome. No single product gives it to you. What gives it to you is layering, time, and consistency — and the K-beauty 10-step routine is the most efficient framework for getting there.
Start with the 5-product minimum routine above. Add layers as you go. Within four to six weeks, you’ll see it — that distinct K-beauty translucent finish that drew you to the routine in the first place.
